The great thing about America is that on any given day an ordinary person can have all of their dreams come true. Just talk to the paint-store clerk from Mount Prospect, Ill Lee DeWyze and he will tell you that dreams can become a reality. It’s something that not only DeWyze will remember forever, but the city of Mount Prospect as well.
DeWyze is the first to admit that in the beginning of the competition he was a more reserved person. While this did lead to him not being considered the top of the bunch from the start, his down-to-earth personality and incredible skills kept him in the competition throughout. As the competition continued to progress, so too did the man from Mount Prospect.
“I think that people saw that I can connect with an audience,” said DeWyze. This is obviously something that is of utmost importance as a performer. What people like about him is that he came from an ordinary background, persevered and ended up making his dreams come true on one of the biggest reality shows today.
The great thing about American Idol is that it allows the viewers of America to decide on the winner. DeWyze certainly developed a connection and fan-base across the country, but he had already won the hearts over from everyone in his home town of Illinois.
The small town was not afraid to show their support for the town celebrity. There were actually moms walking around the city wearing t-shirts that read “Lee DeWyze shook my hand.” This is a true sign of a community backing someone up from there city and knowing the type of person he is.
Prior to the finale, DeWyze was able to go back to Mount Prospect and perform for the city while thanking everyone for the support. He said it was one of the most amazing and moving things he experienced along the way. There was a tremendous crowd that all came to hear the eventual winner sing in person.
Just to show the type of person he is, he was originally only supposed to play three or four songs for the home town. Instead, he ended up treating the audience to nine or 10 songs because of the passion he has for playing in front of live audiences; especially the home town.
To top everything off, at the finale a live cast was shown from Mount Prospect throughout the show and thousands of people showed up to root for DeWyze. By the end of the night Ryan Seacrest announced the Lee DeWyze was the winner and the small town in Illinois was in pandemonium for the small kid from a paint store.
